Fresh Basil from My Balcony

Fresh basil was the star of today's lunch! This past weekend, Mal and I planted a bunch of flowers and a basil plant on our apartment balcony. The basil is growing well and smells delicious, and it is time for consumption!

My lunch today was a "salad" of tomatoes, basil, mozzarella, red onions, ground pepper, and a few sprouts. It was soooo flavorful and fresh! I'm so excited for the bountiful summer produce and herbs! The farmer's markets open very soon!

Also with lunch, I ate my first ever Larabar! I am in love! The cashew cookie flavor was amazing... it reminded me of one of my date concoctions.

I wanted to make sure that I put up an afternoon post, so here's a shot of my very ripe banana that will be part of my fun run fuel later today. My snack will be peanut butter and banana in a Joseph's pita.

Back to work I go! Be back later with a post-race report! :)

I was checking out the "fun run" website--is it tonight? Seeing as I'm in Boston now, I'm hoping to find some running groups and races to take part it, I would love to run in the race if it's tonight...I'm not sure how I got all turned around on the website, where are the dates/times of the races?

hk,

You should run a race! These ones are fun and really laid back. I'm not sure of the exact dates, but there is one a month, usually on a Thursday night. I believe the last race is in September. Ok, I found the dates: http://www.baevents.com/letsrunseries/ Scroll 1/2 way down the page.

Tina- i took your advice on McCormick and Schmicks and it was amazing! soooo good!

Funny, my boyfriend was calling me such a creep for asking for advice on the blog (he doesnt understand the whole food blog thing haha), but boy was he glad i asked!

We went to American Joe's on newbury street and it was soo good. great calamari (it was fried with hot peppers too!) and the most amazing bread.

We walked the whole freedom trail and climbed the bunker hill memorial...so i think i burned off all my meals :)

We also hungout in boston commons and the public gardens all morning...boston is beautiful! you're lucky to live there :)

Hi Tina,

on alot of these food blogs sprouted bread seems to be really popular. I was wondering why? It looks more dry than regular bread. Does it have less calories or more filling. Before I try a loaf, I am trying to understand what makes it so popular.

Lauren,

I googled this info:

Sprouted grain breads are made with sprouted whole wheat as opposed to flour. The whole, organic wheat berries soak in water until they "sprout." The excess water is drained, and the "living sprouts" are ground into dough. The sprouting process naturally converts starchy grains into easily digested maltose and other complex sugars. There is enzyme activity created during germination that begins to "pre-digest" the grains, thereby making the grains and their nutrients and vitamins more readily assimilated by the body.
