Hip Issues. Meh.

My hip is still sore today. As part of my circuit, I did 3 sets of dumbbell squats. Unfortunately, while doing them, my hip had a slight pain to it. Meh. Of course, I decided to skip running today-- instead, I did the elliptical and some light walking as my cardio workout. Perhaps my hip just needs some rest and relaxation? What a bummer. Before my workout, I fueled-up on half an English muffin with peanut butter.

Breakfast was a bowl of banana oatmeal with a spoonful of peanut butter. I've been craving peanut butter like mad since I finished off the box of PB Puffins. I need a new box ASAP! :)

Here is breakfast from above with a multivitamin and a fish oil supplement. I'm rather inconsistent about taking my multivitamin and fish oil-- I probably take them about 2-3 times a week (when I remember). I try to fill my diet with nutritious foods, but these supplements are a good way to make up for missed vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids.

As always, iced coffee to go. Today's was made with vanilla hemp milk and Splenda (1/2 packet). Delish! Here's my iced coffee recipe.

Question of the Day

What is your favorite exercise? What is your least favorite exercise?

Me: My fav is walking (or running) outside. I could walk for hours with good tunes on my ipod or while talking to a friend. It's so relaxing. Least favorite is back exercises. I just don't enjoy doing them. I try to do a few back strengthening exercises each week, but I always end up whizzing through them. I know the importance of a strong back, so this is something I need to work on.

i used to feel the same about back exercises until a trainer i worked with told me they are key for one of my fitness goals: doing real pushups! a strong back makes a huge difference in that and other exercises. i love dead lifts, upright rows and rows performed in a plank position - totally challenging.

that said, i hate any and all leg exercises. yuk!

oh, and don't push your hip. is it in the front, sort of near the groin area, or the side? the front of my hip was bothering me for a while and I just stretched daily (runner's stretch) and took it easy. too painful otherwise.

I love doing intervals on the elliptical or treadmill. I also like my arm workout. But I hate doing lunges and squats - love the results, but it just takes soo much effort, haha :o)

I have hip problems sometimes when I go running. I went to see someone about it and he said I had bursitis, which can flare up once in a while if I'm running the wrong way. Just thought I'd share in case you were seeing some of the same symptoms! Here's a link I found for you: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/bursitis/DS00032

Oh no, feel better!!

Favorite exercise: Kickboxing. I do it every single morning, and it prepares me for the day.

Least favorite exercise: Yoga. I don't have the patience for it.

i LOVE LOVE running. hate the stair stepper. i don't like many leg exercises- i don't like the dead lift because i always tend to either arch my back or lock my knees. argh. i do like seated rows with cables. i love strength training tho! i like the soreness the day after. keep it easy on your hip too! i have to watch my knees- they hurt sometimes from overuse.

What brand of fish oil supplement do you take?

Favorite exercises: Swimming outside. Getting tan, working out and not feeling overheated is just wonderful. And I just love how it works out my entire body.

Least favorite exercises: Abs. I do them and I see results fairly quickly, but I just hate doing abs!! It takes so long to finally get the definition and then if you take a few days off, it is gone. bleh!

Have a wonderful day and take care of that hip!

Beth,

The pain is in the front. Looks like it's stretching and rest for me.

Jen,

THANKS for the link! I will definitely check it out!

Sally,

I don't remember, but I will check tonight for you.

Like you, I love being outdoors, so my fav would be running or walking. Especially with my ipod or another talker. My least fav would be push-ups! Hate them with a passion!!

Thank you for the iced coffee idea. I made some on Sunday, chilled it and it was ready to make into iced coffee this morning - so good and I am going to save money.

My favorite exercise is Running and least fav. I would have to agree with veggiegirl on the yoga - it does nothing for me.

Bummer. Two stretches that really helped me are the aforementioned runner's stretch (which I actually do kneeling on one knee, with the other foot stretched in front so you can really lean into the stretch), and a simple cross-legged pose. Cross your legs and gently bend forward at the waist keeping your back straight. Hold for several breaths, then release and cross your legs in the other direction and repeat.

Beth,

THANK YOU for the stretches! I will be doing lots of them tonight! :)

I agree with veggiegirl. I also love Kickboxing, and unfortunately, can only take one class a week (at the gym) so I make it count! I also love running and walking.

My least favorite exercise is lifting weights, but I have been forcing myself to go 2-3 x per week, and it's getting easier. I am *starting* to maybe dislike it less :)

PS: I've been reading your blog for
about three weeks now, and I really enjoy it! It's very inspirational!

Tina, I have hip issues too, so I empathize with you. I do variations of the stretches that Beth suggested, and they help my hips a lot! I worry that I'm going to need a hip replacement by the time I'm 40!

The exercise comments are making me laugh because I love some of the exercises that other people can't stand :-) But to each her own, right? My three favorite forms of exercise are walking, yoga, and Pilates. I dig a good set of push-ups. The Plank is awesome--it lets you work on upper-body strength and your core. The hardest variation on The Plank is the exercise where you hold the push-up position and alternate bringing one knee up toward the other shoulder. This exercise is so hard but so effective! So I hate it but I love it at the same time.

Can you tell that when it comes to exercise, I'm a low-tech kinda girl?

I take a multivitamin and fatty acid supplement as well. I only remembered them a couple days a week...so I decided to set a reminder on my phone every day.

My fav excercise is my Beach Bootcamp class. I'm lucky enough to live near the beach, and this class meets a few times a week and we do a mix of cardio, strength and abs. I actually look forward to it!

Hey Tina!
This is my first comment on your blog. I accidentally (and fortunately) found your blog a few days ago, while looking for gyoza recipes ( ! ) And I've been reading through and loving it! Your discipline is amazing and the tips, I must say, are inspiring! I also read a few other blogs like yours and some of them from other countries. I'm from all over, but based in South Africa for the past 4 years. I'm seriously thinking about taking up my blogging again... I've quit a few times, but I believe it will assist me with losing those extra pounds that have been haunting me for so long. Anyway, answering your question, my favorite exercise: a draw between long walk along the beach and yoga. My least: ab crunches...
And congrats on your wedding! I'm also getting married next year! It's all about planning these days!
I wish you all the best and hope to get my blog going again, I'll let you know!
