Banana-Granola Mash

Despite my best efforts to get to bed early last night, I had soooo much trouble sleeping! My mind kept wandering, and I woke up a few times during the night. Meh. So frustrating! However, because my body didn't want to sleep, I was able to wake up bright and early at 5 am to hit the gym. I had a decent workout, finished earlier than usual, and had some extra time to relax at home this morning, which, I am happy to say, got my day started off on the right foot.

My morning meal was something new and different: Banana-Granola Mash.

Here's how I made it: I mashed-up a very ripe banana, mixed it with 3 broken-up Oatmeal-Apricot-Almond cookies (granola would work just as well), and added a squirt of sugar-free maple syrup. I love the crunch in the sweet banana mash!

Approximate measurements for Banana-Granola Mash:

1 very ripe banana
1/3 cup granola (or 3 Oatmeal-Apricot-Almond cookies)
1/2 tbsp of sugar-free maple syrup

After mushing-up the banana, cookies/granola, and sf maple syrup in a bowl, I divided the mixture and spread it evenly on top of 2 toasted Van's Organic waffles. So delish! So filling!

As always, I made iced coffee to go-- today with Silk Soy Creamer and 1/2 packet of Splenda. I finished my travel mug of iced coffee before I arrived at work, but somehow I am still dragging. I feel like I need more caffeine to get me through the day! Ugh. Hate that!

Question of the Day

In the last year, what is one health-minded change that has bettered your life?

Me: I've increased the amount of fresh produce in my diet. Before last summer, there would often be days where I'd only eat one serving of fruit and no veggies at all! I still want to incorporate even more fruits and veggies into my diet, but I think that I've made some great progress overall.

Ahh, I hate it when that happens :0( Hope you can sleep better tonight!! At least you got the morning started off right with that SCRUMPTIOUS banana-granola mash - yum!!

One of the health-minded changes that has bettered my life is eating a high-raw, vegan diet (which has done wonders for handling my Crohn's Disease and improving my overall health/well-being).

That breakfast looks so good Tina! I gotta try that. What made a difference in my life style this past year, was first of all, the longer and faster walks and the yoga! That's on the fitness/stress control side. Food wise I believe that cutting down on meat and eating more vegetarian meals (and more yummy tofu) certainly made a difference in my digestion, skin, and energy levels. x

Those waffles do look yummy! It's been a while since I've had some waffles!

Wow, I'm sure I've had a lot of health-minded changes. I've been eating healthy/exercising for a few years now, but now I'm eating more whole foods as opposed to processed/packaged foods. I also quit counting calories a few months ago which is helping with my intuitive eating! And I try to move a little more each day besides my workouts, ie walking to the store/restaurant instead of driving if it's just a short distance. My journey to health has evolved quite a bit since it first started!

That breakfast does look delicious! I gotta try some of that, I think I've been on the "cereal and berries" routine for a while now.

I think one of the health-minded changes that has bettered my life was definitely getting into a cycle of regular exercise not for "weight loss" but for "health and fitness." As soon as I shifted the focus from exercising to melt away pounds to exercising to improve my overall life and well-being, I definitely became an avid fan of gym trips!

P.S. Yes, Tina the Buns & Abs of Steel DVD also makes me really sore. I bought it for like a dollar because it's actually SO OLD. I mean the woman says this exercise combines her favorite activities, one of which is "in line skating" hahah. I need some new DVDs...

Have a good Monday!

My biggest health-minded change is to come to peace with the fact that my body is not (and never will be) perfect. I have to work to keep it in shape, and even with that effort I won't look like a supermodel :D But compared to last year I'm much stronger and have far greater cardio capacity thanks to regular strength training running. I finally feel like I have found the right balance.

My healthiest change is that I am eating more calories on a daily basis and as a result have almost completely stopped binging. I saw a nutritionist who really told me to up my calorie intact and taht has made a huge difference with respect to how I feel about myself both physically and mentally. I also am incorporating more protein and fewer refined carbs, which also helps.

Oh no! I am sorry you didn't get to catch up on some much needed sleep!

Health Minded Changes--the best change that I have done in the last year is starting to feed my body more. I really was limiting my calorie intake and I wasn't fueling my body as much as I should have been. It is amazing how much happier it feels with the right amount of nutrients!

LOVE the iced coffee. Mine is in the fridge right now waiting for me...

Health minded change--trying to focus on hitting all the food groups instead of focusing on calorie intake. It is so much more enjoyable and has really made me eat more of a variety.

that banana-granola mash looks fabulous!

the biggest health-minded change i've made is paying more attention to the quality of the food i'm eating, rather than just the quantity. i used to just grab anything fat-free or low-cal without taking the time to really analyze the nutrtional info. now, i stay away from many fat-free items because they're loaded with sugar, chemicals and quite often high-fructose corn syrup. i'm putting more "real" food in my body

Looks like I've done the same thing :) I eat alot more fruits & veggies. I get in at least 1 serving of a fruit or vegetable with each meal. Now I'm so used to it I feel bad if I don't get it in.

Hi Tina - great idea with the mash!

I think the one thing I've done that's bettered my life is quitting Weight Watchers and eating more oatmeal (I couldn't pick just one!). I think WW is a good program, but I found myself becoming too scale-obsessed. Now I just want to feel comfortable in my skin. And oatmeal? Well, I have never enjoyed breakfast more than I do now! And I am full for sooo long.

Love the banana-granola idea! I also have fallen in love with the Silk creamers. I was using trans fat CoffeeMate for way too long!

One of the health-minded changes that has most bettered my life is eating more veggies. Before food blogs, I really didn't think much of them. Seriously. There was rarely a vegetable I ate. It sounds silly, but looking at all the delicious pictures on the food blogs helped me realize the many possibilities with veggies, and now I can't get enough!

wow does that breakfast look delicious!! That's too bad about not being able to sleep though--that always seems to happen to me too. When I am the most exhausted and really need the sleep, I toss and turn all night long. So frustrating!!

I think my biggest health change has been eating more REAL food and less processed food. I used to live on 100 calorie packs and other "diety" snacks. Now that stuff just doesn't taste good to me and I would so much rather have fresh fruits and veggies!

Two things:

1) That granola looks WONDERFUL.

2) I stopped drinking diet cokes almost entirely. I was at almost one a day, and now I only have one a week -- if that!

Ooo what a yummy and different sounding breakfast! I don't know that I would have thought to put all those things together.

As for a health minded decision. Well the biggest ones have been trying to always add at least one more vegetable (if not more) to my meal and snacking on fruits. Also, trying to distinguish between being hungry and feeling snacky, and if I really am hungry to eat something healthy (and then go for something not as healthy if I still want it).

I loved your breakfast, I eat everyday mashed banana with oats (I love it!).

I think my biggest health change has been eating more whole wheat products, less white bread and trying to eat slowly and enjoying my food.

Good question, Tina!

My biggest healthy change this year was cutting way down on my splenda intake. I started by not eating the Dannon Light n'fit yogurt and replacing in with plain yogurt, stony field farms yogurt or greek yogurt. I still use splenda in coffee, but I am much more aware of my intake.

That breakfast does look really great, to echo everyone else!

My change has been diet and exercise. I think when you eat better, you want to exercise to feel good, and then you want to eat better... it's just a circle!
