Oatmeal X 2

Good morning! My yoga class (vinyasa) this morning was fantastic! I'm relatively new to yoga, so usually in class, I'm worried about doing the poses correctly and not looking like a complete doofus. Today was the first time that I felt comfortable with my abilities and knowledge of the poses. I actually got a very good workout, and felt totally renewed when I finished. (My hamstrings and hips also felt amazing-- much looser!) It was awesome. I am starting to finally understand why people love yoga so much. I just needed to give it a chance! :)

Breakfast in the office was leftover pineapple and cantaloupe from our office party yesterday. Both fruits were still fresh and juicy!

I also had some Kashi instant oatmeal with 2 spoonfuls of peanut butter and a mug of coffee with soy milk and agave nectar. Also pictured: a dollar that I found on the floor of the cafe. Finders keepers! Maybe today is my lucky day?

After eating my first bowl of oatmeal, I was still hungry... like really hungry. I waited a good 15 minutes and sipped my coffee, thinking that maybe the feeling would go away. It never did, so I made myself another packet of Kashi instant oatmeal with a spoonful of peanut butter. My 2nd bowl definitely did the trick-- I'm stuffed now!

Question of the Day

When your hunger is insatiable (aka "bottomless pit"), how do you keep yourself on track?

i think you did the right thing this AM by having a second bowl. i try to listen to my body's cues and eat an extra snack/portion if i need to. then, i give my mind a second to recognize the fact that i ate more -- i dont expect to insantly be satisified. it takes a while for your tummy and brain to talk. :D

If it is real hunger I have an extra snack from my emergency stash, if it is that empty feeling in my stomach when i know i SHOULDN'T be hungry I usually get an iced coffee to fill me up or drink tons of water!

Yay for yoga! Vinyasa is my favorite!

I eat when I am hungry! I also like to look back at what I have eaten to see if I am missing something. Yesterday, I had a hungry day and realized later in the day, I hadn't had any carbs. Sometimes it is veggie or fat that I am missing. For me, balanced meals with plenty of car, fat and protein really help keep me satisfied.

I eat! But I make sure it's something that will fill me up so I don't have to eat again and again and again.

I eat something and try not to feel too guilty about it. My bottomless pit sort of happens, er, monthly, so I just keep that in mind and try to recognize my patterns. I do the same thing as rhodeygirl though - I will fill up on milk or water if I know I've already had enough. Sometimes I'm hungry RIGHT after I finished eating dinner and I think - I can't be hungry, I just ate so much. So I give it some time to digest, drink some water or a latte, and it usually does the trick.

Oh you mean like right now, what do I do about it? I am STARVING this morning and now here at work (west coast time) and have my overnight oats with flax, cinnamon, almond butter and some cinnamon and soy milk that I am about to dig into. I have sipped on a cup of coffee and I already worked out over 3 hours ago and did have a protien shake of 110 calories as soon as I got done...I think I am waiting too long to eat!!! ANyway, the trick for me is to have easy access GOOD food options...otherwise, it will be done hill from there. I am a snacker so if there is anything crunchy and salty and in a chip or popcorn bag I am done!!!

Have a great day...love your blog!!

Tina, how do you fix your oatmeal at work? I am getting ready to have to go to Chicago for work and will be staying at a hotel. I was going to bring some oatmeal packets and fix it in the room. But there is no microwave, so I was going to try really hot water. Any tips are welcomed on travel food and snacks. There is Whole Foods around the corner from my hotel. Thanks!

Carrie,

I just use hot water from our water cooler (there is a hot and cold water option). It works great!

Mmmm. Sometimes I'm actually thirsty when I feel like a bottomless pit. Or other times I'm hungry. When that's the case, I eat something with protein...like cheese. Something with that 'umami' deliciousness always does the trick too!!

Yoga... that's how I keep my sanity, pretty much...
I get hungrier after a hard workout and on those specific days when your hormones are all over the place.

Thanks Tina, there is a coffee maker in the room, so I figured I could just let the water heat up through that(minus the coffee). Oh, and I always use 2 packets of oatmeal - 1 just doesn't do the trick for me. Thanks again!

Tina, maybe you could try making your oatmeal with milk or soymilk? I always do that when I have it in the office as an afternoon and it makes it SO much more tasty and voluminous with the extra protein. I just put the milk in and microwave it a minute and a half, and voila! Awesomeness :)

Yay for yoga! So glad you are giving it a chance, it's a wonderful activity, both mentally and physically!

I think it depends on what type of hunger it is, I would love to say that I never deny myself if it's real hunger, but I'm still working on trusting myself again, so that's not always the case. If it's just boredum munchies I'll make a bottle of crystal light, sometimes all I need is a little flavor and that bottomless pit feeling will go away. Great question!

Glad you had a good yoga class! I have yet to try it, but it sounds amazing. Especially about loosening the muscles. The muscles in my legs are so tight from running, they would probably snap if I stretched them too far!

That fruit looks delicious! :-)

When my first instinct is to open the fridge/pantry and inhale everything in it, I try to slow down and think about what I really want. And I make sure it has a good amount of protein. And then, eat it slowly...if possible! Then wait. The insatiable part usually goes away after a few minutes and I'm good to go. Mind you, this doesn't happen EVERY time! teehee

Good question because I've been bottomless this week. Honestly, I eat. I try to make healthy choices but I don't just nibble on carrots or something because I'll just KEEP eating! I try to do 5 - 6 mini meals on days like this and work out a little extra to compensate.

I eat as well when I feel hungry because if your body truly needs the food then you shouldn't deprive yourself- good choices this morning

I stop. Grab a glass of water. Drink said glass of water sloooowly. Then take the time to figure out what I'm really craving and have a small amount of it. (no digging through cabinets trying a little of everything to kill an unknown craving that way.)

I am really glad you're enjoying yoga now! Is there a mirror in the class? If so, don't look at them. I know they are traditional in Bikram, but not vinyassa. Also, I like to close my eyes.

If I am a botomless pit I think the best thing for me to do is to have something substantial, like a a sandwich instead of small snacks. Usually that just makes me hungrier and with a sandwich I *feel* like I've eaten more.

I don't know why it's not working right now, but the Heather is me (Hangry Pants)!

I pretty much keep enough water in my belly at all times to squash any hunger that may arise. If that doesn't help, then I know I'm really hungry & I'll eat. If your body is telling you it's hungry, you need to feed it.

I like to slowly sip on a nice warm cup of tea - I try to savor it. I will also add some more veggies to my meals to add bulk when I am having one of those hungry days.
